Reinvention??????

The notion of reinvention has been on my mind lately, and how timely with spring at our heels. Have you ever said, or heard someone else say, “I’ve reinvented myself so many times” or “it is time to reinvent myself again?” When I hear it, my curiosity moves into high gear. Specifically understanding what’s triggering the urge.

Reinvention is good. It’s growth.”

As an example, take Sandra Bullock.  She just won her first Oscar for the leading female role in The Blindside. Previous to that role she was mostly known as a funny leading lady.   For those of you who did not see The Blindside, Sandra Bullock played a very serious role.  Whatstruck me was a recent comment I read where she said, "I don't like when people tell me I can't do something. Just because I did commercial films doesn’t mean I can't do wonderful, small art-house films."  Was that the trigger to change the kind of roles she played? Was it someone telling her she couldn’t do something?  Did it serve as the catalyst for her to show more of who she was capable of being? Interesting isn’t it?

What are the triggers that help expand our capabilities? Is it the unhappiness stemming from work or perhaps the fear of getting laid off? Is it becoming a parent for the first time, or being called to be leader in your business or community?  Is it simply because someone told you that you just couldn’t do it? Reinvention is good. It’s growth.  However have you ever thought about leading the change from the inside out? Earlier in my life I was driven by external factors, more money, bigger title, my own very positive can do attitude. It was the kind of “can do” attitude that came from “proving something” mainly to myself. I accomplished a lot, but it took me many years of reinventing myself to realize that my lack of fulfillment was driven by external factors.  What we know for sure is thatchange happens all the time. The lessons I learned are to make changes that are directed from within. A powerful change- agent for learning inside/out change is by taking a Living Your Vision®workshop. Not only will you be able to lead the change in your life, you will also have the tools to know when you are out of alignment.

What part of your life do you want to reinvent right now? Are you ready to lead it or wait for it to lead you – it is all a choice, what’s yours?

Reinvention is an intriguing word to me and I appreciate the questions you raise Karen.  I can hear myself saying that word in the past when I chose to make a transition in my life either professionally or personally.  I’ve been thinking about the word before your article because it occurred to me that I am not actually re-inventing me.  I am re-connecting and re-newing me.  Me is me and what I’ve learned over time is how hard it is to “see” and be all of me.  The minute I catch myself looking outside of me to others I am disconnected.  And, I realize it takes a whole lot more energy to choose to follow someone else’s idea for me.  Exhausting in fact.  By contrast when I reconnect with myself from the inside-out, I feel energy come into me, as if lifting a weight I didn’t even know I was carrying around.  That is what our Living Your Vision workshop did for me.

So, my word for the phenomenon you describe is renewal by reconnection with my self, my center, my core and making life choices from that point of view.  This is both freeing and energizing!
